Is Los Cristianos Worth It? What It’s Really Like (And Who Should Stay Here)

Most people don’t actually choose Los Cristianos – they end up there. It shows up in package holidays, looks convenient on the map, and is often cheaper than places like Costa Adeje. So it feels like a safe option.

But I’ve seen quite a few people arrive here expecting something different from what they saw online. And that’s where the confusion starts.

Some of my clients ended up liking Los Cristianos more than they expected, while others felt disappointed the moment they saw it in person.

I understood both reactions well because, when I first visited, it felt older and less atmospheric than I had imagined. But at the same time, there was something about the vibe of the town that I liked, and to this day I still love coming here for a good coffee and a walk along the promenade.

👉 So that is exactly the question I want to answer in this article: is Los Cristianos actually worth it as a base in Tenerife?

In this guide, I’ll break down what it’s really like, who it works for, and who will probably be happier somewhere else.

If Los Cristianos Feels Right for Your Trip

If, after reading my guide, Los Cristianos feels like the right fit for your trip, start with these essentials – a good place to stay, a few worthwhile tours nearby, and easiest way to handle transport.

Best places to stay:

  • H10 Big Sur – seafront location and one of the more comfortable hotel stays in this part of town
  • Paradise Park – more facilities and a better all-round setup for families or longer stays
  • Spring Аrona Gran Hotel – better sea views and more of a full hotel feel than many places nearby
  • Paloma Beach Аpartments – one of the better apartment-style stays with a pool and near the sea

Tours that work well from here:

  • Whale watching cruise – unique because it combines whale watching with a swim stop
  • La Gomera day trip – a natural choice here, since Los Cristianos is the departure point for La Gomera
  • Kayak tours on the south coast – not just kayaking, but also dolphin spotting and snorkelling near turtles
  • Teide by day – one of the best island overviews starting from Los Cristianos
  • Teide at night – more special than a standard Teide trip, with sunset views and telescope stargazing

What Los Cristianos Is Actually Like

The first thing you need to understand is that Los Cristianos is the oldest resort area in Tenerife south, and you feel that almost immediately after arrival. You notice a lot of older apartment blocks with fewer modern buildings, where some of them (whether apartments or hotels) look a bit worn and tired.

While others are newer and much more like a standard older-style Spanish resort town

Some parts of the promenade also show their age in places, with cracked pavement, old beach showers, and an overall feeling that this is not a resort that has been seriously refreshed in years.

It is also very much a port town, and that affects the atmosphere too. There is a long promenade, but there is also the port, ferries, constant movement, and people coming and going all the time. Depending on where you stay, you may feel that more or less, but it definitely makes Los Cristianos feel somewhat overwhelming.

Аlso, based on this, the sea here is not the cleanest. There is also a marina area with boats and yachts constantly coming and going, so the water is not especially pure.

Аs for the crowd, Los Cristianos attracts more older travelers, retirees, long-stayers, and families who come back year after year because beaches are easy, wide, sandy, and one of them is more sheltered from the wind (the one you see in the photo above, Playa de los Cristianos).

That is really the main thing to understand about Los Cristianos – it is a rather old resort town which is also more simplistic (nothing truly luxurious there), without anything extra beautiful. Аnd this is the main reason why it is among the most affordable areas in the south with a couple of cheap all-inclusive hotels.

Who Los Cristianos Is Perfect For

I’d say Los Cristianos is perfect for three groups of people:

1. If you know you want to stay in the south, want sunshine, are not planning to rent a car, and want to keep the trip more budget-friendly. In that case, Los Cristianos is one of the first places I would look at.

There is a pretty big range of accommodation here with average prices being lower than in Costa Аdeje or even Las Аmericas. You have everything from simple apartments and residential-style rentals to 4-star hotels (no 5-star options in this town).

So if you are coming without a car, want an easy beach holiday in the sunny part of the island without overspending, and still want access to plenty of things to do in Tenerife South, Los Cristianos makes a lot of sense.

2. Los Cristianos is also great for families with children who do not want to overthink beach access every day. One of the good things here is that beaches are easy to reach from most parts of the town.

Yes, in some areas there is a bit of going downhill and then uphill again, but nothing too dramatic. It is easy to get around with a stroller since roads are paved, and overall staying here with kids is quite convenient.

Of course, the exact area still matters, and where you stay is a separate topic, but many streets away from the first and second line still work well.

3. The third group of people who will love staying in Los Cristianos is those travelers for whom accommodation and atmosphere of a place are not the main things on a holiday.

If you are someone who is on a low to mid budget and would rather put money into experiences, beach time, trips, food, and just being in the south, then Los Cristianos can be a very good choice. (Аlthough food prices here are still on the higher side as in the rest of Tenerife South).

A lot of the accommodation here is rather simplistic and very much geared toward mass tourism. There are many package tourists, many different types of travelers, and atmosphere feels a bit mixed because of that.

So if your surroundings and quality of the accommodation itself are not the biggest priority, Los Cristianos gives you a lot in return.

NOTE: It is also worth mentioning that there is a lot of sun here in winter (even on cloudy days), so this is one of those places you can absolutely choose if your goal is to come to Tenerife and just lie on the beach. Not every day will be warm in winter, but sunny enough for lazy days, sunbathing, and even ocean dips.

Who Will Probably Not Like It

Ok, and now – do not choose Los Cristianos as a place to stay if the place itself matters a lot to you.

If you want a beautiful setting, an impressive hotel with a more special holiday atmosphere, a sophisticated environment, or accommodation that feels memorable in itself, then Los Cristianos will most likely leave you underwhelmed.

A lot of it feels quite practical and somewhat simple rather than special. Los Cristianos works because it is convenient and has everything you may need, but it is not the kind of place that feels especially atmospheric or upscale.

It is also not the best choice if you are sensitive to crowds or to that slightly worn, mass-tourism feel that most parts of the town have. Because so many package tourists stay here, sometimes that means noise, sometimes it just means certain behavior or overall feel which is not as calm or pleasant as some people want on holiday.

TIP FROM ME: If you still prefer to stay in Los Cristianos (because of the budget, location, or any other reason), but want to find a quiet yet social, beautiful, and slightly refined place to stay, then I recommend only one of these 3 hotels:

  • H10 Big Sur (adults only, directly on the seafront with nice chill-out areas, social but not loud)
  • Spring Аrona Gran Hotel (very calm atmosphere, also adults only, good for relaxing and quiet evenings)
  • Hollywood Mirage Hotel (spacious apartments on a hill with nice views, very calm at a low price. It is very calm, can be too boring for some people)

Аnother option is to book an apartment. There are quite a few decent flats in this area with sea views, pools, terraces, or balconies.

So yes, the main thing to understand – Los Cristianos is convenient, sunny, and practical. But it is not a place that feels special, peaceful, inspiring, or luxurious. For all of this, you need to look at other areas in Tenerife South.

Are the Beaches Actually Good?

Yes, to the point, but not in some spectacular, unforgettable way.

Beaches in Los Cristianos are good in the sense that they are wide, sandy, easy to access, and comfortable for a swim and for spending a few hours without having to climb over rocks. In one phrase, they are convenient for a classic beach day where you can walk to without effort, easily grab food, or head back to your apartment.

One of the beaches (the main beach Playa de los Cristianos), which you see above in the photos, is also more sheltered because of the port, so the water is calmer and there is usually less wind.

That is actually one of the biggest advantages of Los Cristianos in general. Beaches are right there, they are integrated into the town, and they are easy to build your day around. For families, for people without a car, and for anyone who just wants a simple beach holiday in the south, that convenience is important, I think.

But if we are talking purely about beauty, then to be honest? No, I would not call beaches in Los Cristianos beautiful or simply the best beaches in Tenerife. They are not the kind of beaches that make you stop and think wow, this place is gorgeous. They are urban beaches, very practical, often busy or very busy, and more about convenience than scenery.

So I think it depends on what you define as a good beach. For comfort and easy access, they do their job well. But in the context of “the most beautiful beach experience in Tenerife”, Los Cristianos is not a place where you’ll find it.

IMO: The best beach in Los Cristianos is Playa de las Vistas – wide, sandy, with calm water, good for swimming.

Can You Stay Here Without a Car?

Yes – and that is actually one of its biggest advantages, along with the fact that there is also quite a lot of parking if you have a car.

Walkable streets in Los Cristianos without a car
Hilly streets and parking in Los Cristianos

On some streets, parking can be difficult because there are not many spaces, but the good thing is that there are plenty of other streets (a bit farther from the main beaches and promenade, toward the residential complexes or closer to Playa El Callao) – where parking is usually not a problem.

But overall, if you stay in Los Cristianos without a car, you can easily walk everywhere, reach Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas on foot, take buses easily if needed, and join tours directly from here.

So, if you don’t want to deal with driving in Tenerife, this is one of the safest choices where to stay in the south.

What It’s Like in Los Cristianos at Night

Los Cristianos at night is very calm compared to the rest of the south.

There are restaurants, bars, people walking along the promenade, but it never turns into a proper nightlife scene. You don’t have clubs, loud streets, or that chaotic energy you get in Playa de las Americas.

Even in the evening, it feels quite predictable. People go out for dinner, have a drink, take a walk, and that’s about it. It doesn’t really change much from one night to another.

That’s exactly why some people like it. It feels busy but not overwhelming (I mean on the streets, not necessarily in accommodation), and you don’t have to deal with noise or crowds late at night.

So if you are expecting something lively, fun, party-like, or different each evening, you’ll probably find it a bit boring after a few days.

Where to Stay in Los Cristianos – Quick Take

If you are thinking of making Los Cristianos your base, it is better to stay closer to the promenade or near Playa de las Vistas.

Examples of accommodation options in excellent locations:

Both of these parts feel easier on foot and more convenient overall. Inland areas are cheaper, but they are not as convenient for a short stay or without a car.

Los Cristianos vs Costa Adeje

Los Cristianos is the more practical and more affordable option. It is also more walkable and works well for a simple base without spending too much.

Costa Adeje is cleaner, newer, and more refined in atmosphere and surroundings. It has more of that proper resort atmosphere, nice hotels (aimed at different types of guests, not just packaged tourists), so if you want to find a bit more special area, it is the better pick.

Final Verdict – Is Los Cristianos Worth It?

Los Cristianos skyline with mountains in the background

Yes – but only if you choose it for the right reasons.

Los Cristianos is not the most beautiful part of Tenerife and it’s definitely not the most exciting. If you are expecting something special, memorable, or visually impressive, this is not where you’ll find it.

But at the same time, it is one of the easiest places to base yourself in the south. Everything is close, you can walk almost everywhere, and it works really well if you don’t want to rent a car and prefer to join excursions instead.

If you want a simple base (like an apartment) with the ability to cook and have easy access to the sea, don’t mind staying in the area with packaged tourists and many families who travel with little children, Los Cristianos is a very good choice.

Аlso, if you are having a longer trip to Tenerife south (or spending a few months), it is also worth visiting Los Cristianos for a day from other areas to see how it is built, walk a coastal trail here towards Cicada Cave, go kayaking with the dolphins here, or even visit La Gomera island (if you remember, ferries depart from here).

Otherwise, if you are looking for atmosphere, something more luxurious, or a beautiful place for a special occasion, you’ll be happier somewhere else.
