Seasons & Weather in Tenerife by Month – What to Know & Expect
When people talk about the weather in Tenerife, many love to say that Tenerife doesn’t have bad weather or call it the “Island of Eternal Spring” where you can visit any time of year.
Well, that’s mostly true, I often say the same. You really can visit Tenerife at any month.
But when you dive into details and consider the island’s various latitudes and the diversity of its climate, you start to realize that Tenerife actually experiences a bit of everything – winter, mild autumn, rain, and even a scorching summer. It all depends on the month and the region of the island.
Let’s go through the weather in Tenerife month by month, including the climate, water temperature in the ocean (so you know when swimming is comfortable and when it is not), and what you can expect from the island in different seasons of the year.
It will give you a solid idea of the best month to visit Tenerife based on your preferences and needs!
Weather in Tenerife By Month in Winter
December
Air & Water Temperature:
During the first month of winter, Tenerife experiences warm weather, with air temperatures around +23°C in the south and around +21°C in the north throughout the month.
Ocean temperatures at around +21°C during the first week or so and then it drops to around 20°C.
What to Expect From Climate:
During this month Tenerife is green and lush, not just in the north of the island but also in the south.
There is still a lot of sun, although seeing clouds over your head is already common (even in the south) humidity is on the rise (with levels around 75%) and it may rain occasionally. (Last year, for example, we had rain in December for about six days throughout the month, but it didn’t last long. If it rained in one place, the sun could be shining in another.)
Rain also helped the south green up very quickly, so by the end of December, Costa Adeje and Golf del Sur looked as if they had spring in their areas.
Is It a Good Month to Visit
December is a fantastic time to visit Tenerife if you’re willing to spend more, as it’s one of the most expensive months.
You’ll be rewarded with the best weather in Europe, lots of opportunities for sightseeing, some unique chances for stargazing, Canarian-style Christmas at the end of the year, and beautiful sights like Mount Teide, which may have snow.
One thing to know – it is already too cold to swim in the sea for most people, so do not plan your vacation solely around the beach.
If this is the month when you plan to go, then read my tips and review of Tenerife in December.
January
Air & Water Temperature:
In January, Tenerife enjoys a mild winter due to the warm current that flows around the island from north to south. But compared to December, it is already cooler.
Daytime temperatures range from +17°C to +20°C in the north and between 20°C to +23°C in the south. In the north (in Tacoronte area) we already have +14°C at nighttime while in La Laguna +8°C+9°C.
The sea temperature in the Atlantic Ocean is around +19°C, making it possible to take a dip, but for many people the water is already cold for prolonged swimming.

What to Expect From the Weather:
January is typically the most humid month in the Canary Islands which is also quite wet.
Northern region of Tenerife (just like Gran Canaria at this time) is influenced by cool northeast trade winds, resulting in frequent rain (that can happen every second or third day. In contrast, southern part basks in sunshine, with only about 5 to 6 rainy days during the month.
NOTE FROM ANYA: When I say that January brings a lot of rain to Tenerife, I don’t mean it rains continuously. It’s not like London or Ireland, where it can pour for days on end. Instead, if it does rain in Tenerife, it’s often just for a few hours, after which the sun usually comes out, or it may just remain cloudy. Keep in mind that this weather can vary by location – while one area might be experiencing rain, a neighboring spot could be sunny or cloudy with no rain at all.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
Yes, January is a good month for a vacation in Tenerife. The festive atmosphere at the start of the month, with many visitors celebrating the New Year, makes it lively.
After the holidays, the crowds thin out, allowing for easier exploration and slightly lower prices for airfare, accommodation and rental cars.
During this time of the year, you can enjoy pleasant weather, leisurely walks, excursions, and even surfing, making it an excellent time for a quieter yet activity-filled experience.
February
Air & Water Temperature:
February temperature is similar to the temperature in January with the difference that in the last week of the month, it doesn’t drop below +20°C during the day.
Water temperature in the ocean remains cool at +19°C.
What to Expect From the Weather:
February is the coldest month in Tenerife and mainly so due to the winds that blow around the island. In El Sauzal we turn on our heat radiators almost every day during the first 3 weeks of this month.
South still stays warmer (as well as sunnier) and you can get a nice tan in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas. But Calima winds drop visibility significantly, so it becomes difficult to enjoy a visit to panoramic restaurants or cafes or participate in some outdoor activities.
There are only 3-4 rainy days in southern Tenerife while in the north there are 7-8.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
It depends on how you look at it since February has its pros and cons. On the one hand, there are strong winds that can disrupt beach days and cause flight delays, but on the other hand, this month offers a pleasant escape from the harsh winter in much of Europe, the US, and Canada.
But the main thing that gives a number one reason to visit in February is Carnival de Santa Cruz, this is one of the largest, most famous and bright carnivals in the world where people dress up and celebrate the spirit of fun, freedom, and tradition. (Here are just a couple of photos from our visit last year)
Outside carnival (mainly after it), February is also a good pick for a getaway with fewer crowds and potential discounts at all-inclusive hotels, especially in the southern part of the island.
Just be prepared for some weather-related challenges.
Tenerife Climate by Month in Spring
March
Air & Water Temperature:
In the first month of spring, the sun tends to shine more frequently, causing daytime temperatures to reach stable +23°C in the south.
In the north, it is on average +21°C. At night, it is very common to see temperatures around +15+16°C even in the sunniest part such as Costa Adeje.
Ocean remains at a winter-like temperature of +19°C throughout the whole month.
What Is Weather Like:
You can expect most days to be sunny throughout the whole month but wind (Calima) is also common. Mornings and evenings are still cool.
In the second half of the month, Tenerife starts looking particularly scenic with blooming flowers and trees. Rain is scarce, occurring on just a few days here and there.
When the skies are clear, it is ideal for sunbathing and strolling along the beach in coastal towns.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
March is a very good time to visit for warm weather in Europe, for scenic drives around the island, and for excursions.
However, prices are still on the higher side mainly because there is a spring break in Spain (that falls on different weeks in different schools) and many families come to vacation in Tenerife during this time.
April
Air & Water Temperature:
In April, spring is in full swing in Tenerife at a slow mode – everything is blooming beautifully and temperatures are increasing.
During the day in the south, the air temperature reaches +25°C, making it an inviting time to be outdoors and swim in pools. But, the sea remains chilly, with the Atlantic Ocean’s temperature still at +19°C.
What to Expect From the Weather:
On lower elevations (in both south and north) it is stably warm all the time. There are no big temperature fluctuations between day and night as in February and January. Yet, in early mornings and late evenings, in the north, the weather is still cool.
Precipitation during this month is already minimal. Days are getting longer and sun is becoming more intense. It’s time to make sure you have sunscreen and sunglasses handy!
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
April is one of those perfect months when to visit Tenerife because the weather becomes more stable, winds calm down, and temperatures rise.
Nature is in full bloom, making the island particularly beautiful. It’s also a good time for sightseeing and enjoying fresh fruits. Plus, April is that month when to save on travel costs before prices go up in late spring.
My favorite part about April in Tenerife is Easter and Semana Santa (Whole Week) which is an energetic celebration filled with religious processions, local traditions, and festive events throughout the island.
If you come on vacation during this time and plan to travel to Garachico, La Laguna, Guimar, Santa Cruz, and other lesser-visited towns in Tenerife, you’ll have a unique cultural experience in a deeply meaningful way.
May
Air & Water Temperature:
In May, daytime temperatures are consistently around +24+25°C in the south and +23°C in the north, while at night, they drop to +16+18°C. The sea is finally warmer and water temperature warms up to +20°C.
What to Expect From the Weather:
In May, Tenerife coastal areas are warm, sometimes even hot, with long days of sunshine. The humidity stays moderate, and while rain is possible earlier in the month, it’s unlikely towards the end.
The number one thing you can expect – that’s predictability in terms of temperature and absence of stronger cold winds by the sea. No need to take warmer clothes for the early mornings and evenings for the coast, but pack long sleeves (and even a hoodie) for the Teide area and for those nights when you stay outdoors until late.
The last week of the month marks the start of beach season in Tenerife (as on other Canary Islands as well), although the ocean is still cool for swimming.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
May is excellent in terms of price. It is one of the cheaper months when prices for everything are at their lowest (including food prices in restaurants).
It is also ideal for those who enjoy cultural tours and outdoor activities. Plan a trip to Mount Teide (to see a rare flower Tajinaste that you can’t find anywhere else in the world! and it blooms only in May-June) or take a boat tour to spot whales between Tenerife and La Gomera.
Weather of Tenerife in Summer
June
Air & Water Temperature:
In June, the weather is pleasantly warm during the day, with temperatures ranging from +25 to +27°C, and it can even reach up to +30°C in the south on some days.
Nights remain comfortable at around +18°C. The sea temperature is also inviting, warming up to +21 to +22°C, making it a great time for swimming and outdoor activities.
What to Expect From the Weather:
Stability. It is stabily warm. Nights are comfortable and there is no need to turn on AC.
In June, ocean swimming finally becomes comfortable for most people, making it the first month of the year when everyone can truly enjoy the water.
Hotel pools also warm up naturally, as many aren’t heated, so it’s a great time to book a stay – whether you’re opting for a budget-friendly all-inclusive or a luxurious 5-star resort.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
If you enjoy warm, moderately hot weather and prefer a unique island experience, then spending your vacation in June in Tenerife is a great choice.
The comfortable air temperature, refreshing ocean, therapeutic volcanic sand on the beaches, and the gentle breeze that softens the rising heat are the key advantages of visiting the island during this month.
July
Air & Water Temperature:
In July, temperatures in Tenerife rise further, reaching between +28°C and +30°C in the south. Although past summer and in July last year there were days with +32+33°C. In the north, we had between +26+28°C on most days.
The ocean’s temperature also increases, reaching around +22°C.
What to Expect From the Weather:
There are an impressive 29 sunny days throughout the month without any rain. Mornings still may begin with some cloud cover, but the skies typically clear up by noon.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
July is a great month to visit Tenerife. Although it’s the peak of summer, the heat remains comfortable, making it ideal for both beach and sightseeing activities. In fact in the north, July is so comfortable that you can easily plan to stay there to escape heat in Europe.
The ocean temperature is warm enough for swimming, though young children may enjoy it more at the end of the month.
July season also brings a delightful variety of ripe fruits available at local markets and supermarkets.
August
Air & Water Temperature:
During the daytime in southern Tenerife, temperatures can rise to +30°C, on some days higher. At night, the air cools down to around +21°C.
Northern Tenerife can have some anomalous days with temperatures around +27+28°C but for the most part, it stays around +23°C, at night +19-20°C.
The ocean water is pleasantly warm at +23°C, which is perfect for enjoying swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
What to Expect From the Weather:
Expect a lot of sun everywhere (!), even in Anaga National Park which is cloudy and rainy for most of the year.
In the south, expect hot days when you’ll need to use AC to cool down and in the north, the temperature will be perfect during the day and night when you can just sleep with open windows and enjoy the breeze.
Refreshing winds from the ocean also help alleviate the heat in southern part of the island, making it a suitable destination for those who find it challenging to relax in the warmer climates of European resorts.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
August is a good month to visit Tenerife when you can comfortably enjoy both beach and sightseeing experiences. It is also an excellent choice for a vacation with children when you can enjoy family outings to attractions like Loro Parque, ostrich farm, or Siam Park.
However, because of the versatility of the weather, it is a bit challenging to choose between relaxing by the beach or exploring the island!
Weather in Tenerife in Autumn
September
Air & Water Temperature:
September in Tenerife has just perfect weather. Air temperatures reach around +28°C, while the Atlantic Ocean warms up to its peak at +24°C.
In shallow waters and smaller coves, the temperature is even higher.
What to Expect From the Weather:
In September, expect plenty of warm and sunny days despite the daylight hours decreasing to around 12 hours.
The sky is typically clear, with only a couple of rainy days throughout the month (that are usually brief and light) which is why it is perfect for coastal walks by the cliffs and even some hiking.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
Yes, September is a good month to visit Tenerife. While it marks the beginning of the high tourist season, the warm sea water attracts many visitors.
Just be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices compared to the low season.
October
Air & Water Temperature:
In November, Tenerife offers a pleasant and warm autumn experience.
Air temperatures stay around +26°C while the ocean stays pleasantly warm at +22°C, which is still ideal for swimming, even on some beaches in the north.
What to Expect From the Weather:
Overall, the weather is delightful for relaxation by the coast and excursions. You can expect Velvet season during the entire month, but there is a mix of warm sunshine and occasional cooler days.
While beach weather most of the time is comfortable, it’s worth being prepared for some temperature fluctuations. The island’s unique geography and microclimates can influence local weather patterns, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before planning any activities.
Despite these variations, Tenerife’s overall climate is simply ideal for outdoor pursuits, going into nature, and catching some sun on its beaches.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
October can be a mixed month to visit Tenerife but not in terms of weather, mainly because of the crowds and prices. It still holds some remnants of summer, with pleasant beach weather for much of the month.
But at the same time, it attracts too many people from Europe who come to the island exactly during this month to spend the winter which is the reason why prices go up tremendously. It becomes almost impossible to rent anything below $100 per night, even when looking for an apartment away from the sea and city life.
If you don’t mind paying more, are prepared for variable weather and are flexible with your plans, then October will bring a very good experience.
November
Air & Water Temperature:
As autumn draws to a close, air temperatures in Tenerife settle between +23°C and +25°C during the day. Ocean is also quite welcoming, with water temperatures around +21°C, still good for swimming.
What to Expect From the Weather:
In November, the number of sunny days decreases. The sky is often overcast, and winds pick up. It starts to rain more frequently, but overall, the amount of precipitation remains low, with just 4 to 5 days of rain in total.
You can expect mild comfortable weather during the day and night.
Is It a Good Month to Visit?
Yes and no at the same time. Yes – because of the weather which is still nice and warm and also because of the winds at this time of the year that are perfect for fans of windsurfing or kitesurfing. Overall, November in Tenerife provides an excellent opportunity to soak up the sun and relish the warm weather!
No – because November is among the most expensive months when to visit (unreasonably expensive). Apartment owners significantly inflate their rates during this time as well as rental car companies and hotels.
It is still possible to find good quality accommodation or rent a car in Tenerife on a budget but if you book with a lot of time in advance.
