Weather in Puerto de la Cruz: What to Expect Before You Book

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the most misunderstood places in Tenerife when it comes to weather.

People expect beach days and constant sun, and end up disappointed. Not because this city is bad, but because their expectations about the seasons and weather in this part of Tenerife are wrong.

It is definitely warmer in Puerto than in most of Europe year-round, but it’s not as stable and predictable as you might think.

Here’s what the weather in Puerto de la Cruz is actually like, and what you should realistically expect.

Quick Weather Overview in Puerto de la Cruz (by month/seasons)

Puerto de la Cruz is warm year-round, but weather here is inconsistent and driven by clouds, not temperature. You’ll often see similar numbers on the forecast – but it can feel completely different depending on sun, clouds, and wind.

For example:

  • 19°C with clouds can feel like 15–16°C → you’ll want a long sleeve or even a light jacket
  • 19°C with sun can feel like 22–23°C → strong sun, easy to burn

That’s why checking temperature alone is misleading here.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

  • 18–22°C most days
  • Cloud cover is frequent (I’d say around 20 days each month start sunny and then get clouds with occasional rain in the second half of the day, all other days are fully sunny)
  • Rain is not constant, but expect several rainy days each month (it is difficult to say how many, last winter, we had so much rain here, especially in February, almost every second day, while in previous years winters were incredibly sunny with only a few days of rain)
  • It seldom rains nonstop for the whole day. If it rains, it usually doesn’t last long and is followed by sun or just cloud cover.

Spring (Mar–May)

  • March: one of the rainiest months, unstable, many cloudy days
  • April: still mixed – clouds + sun changing quickly. However, there is already not much rain, maybe one day per week or so and when it rains, it doesn’t last long
  • May: noticeably better → more sun, fewer rainy days, in fact, many days already feel like comfortable summer (not hot, but really warm). May in Tenerife feels wonderful everywhere, including Puerto de la Cruz

Summer (Jun–Sep)

  • Warmest and most stable period
  • Most days have sun, even if clouds appear
  • Full grey days are rare
  • Still not as consistently sunny as the south, but this is the best time for the weather

Autumn (Oct–Nov)

  • September: warm, often still comfortable
  • October: Weather becomes more unstable again, rain returns, especially closer to November
  • November: Mix of very nice days and sudden changes

The Most Important Thing to Know about Puerto de la Cruz Weather

  • Cloud cover can sit for hours or clear suddenly
  • Wind is frequent here, and no one will ever be able to predict when it usually hits. One year – it can be really windy in summer and just a few windy days in January, but next year it can be the opposite
  • On days when there is wind, it feels colder than the forecast shows
  • Ocean conditions are rough for the most part of the year, except summer (but again, there is no way to predict when exactly the sea is going to be calm)

So, Puerto de la Cruz is not a destination for lying on the beach every day. It’s a place where the weather shifts and your plans should adapt to it.

Is Puerto de la Cruz Sunny?

Yes, but not consistently.

You do get sun, but clouds are a regular part of the weather here, especially outside summer. In winter and spring, it’s common to have long cloudy periods with some sunny breaks, while in summer most days have sun but not always full blue skies.

If you are expecting guaranteed sunshine every day, Puerto de la Cruz isn’t the best choice. Choose it only if you are OK with the mixed weather (which may lean to the more cloudy side).

Why It Feels Cloudier Than Tenerife South

The north of Tenerife, including Puerto de la Cruz, faces the trade winds, which bring in clouds that often get stuck against the mountains. The south is more sheltered, so it stays sunnier and drier most of the year.

That doesn’t mean Puerto de la Cruz is cloudy every day – it means the weather changes more often, and the same day can feel grey in the morning and sunny later or sunny in the morning and grey in the afternoon.

Best Months to Visit Puerto de la Cruz

It depends on what you want from Puerto de la Cruz, because “best” here is not only about the weather.

For the highest chance of sun, beach days, and warmer evenings, summer is the best choice – especially June to September. This is when Puerto de la Cruz feels the most summery, even if you can still get some clouds.

But if you want to walk a lot, explore old streets, do coastal hikes, visit viewpoints, or spend a full day in Loro Parque, summer is not always ideal. It can be too hot from the morning and sun gets strong very quickly. For that kind of trip, spring, autumn, and many winter days are actually more comfortable.

If you want slow days with cafes, terraces, just wandering around the city, and going on scenic drives nearby, you can do that year-round with the right clothes. But it feels easier from April to October, when evenings are warmer, there is not much strong wind during the day, and you don’t need to think as much about layers.

For fewer people, I’d look at after Easter, May, June, September, and October. Winter is beautiful in Puerto de la Cruz, but it is also very busy, so I wouldn’t call it the best time if you want a quieter stay.

Worst Months If You Want Beach Weather

If your goal is proper beach days (sun from morning till evening and actually spending time by the ocean or pool) this is only really reliable in summer, mainly July and August, with some good days in June.

Outside of that, you can still get sunny, warm days in winter, spring, and autumn, sometimes really good ones. But they are not consistent, so you can’t plan your trip around beach time.

Everyone talks about Tenerife beaches, but this is why I love the north. Quiet, green, and completely different from what most people expect. It is calmer and a lot more local – the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. In general, Puerto de la Cruz is not a beach-focused destination. You come here for the atmosphere, greenery, coastal views, local feel, and black-sand beaches of the north for photography and scenery, but not for lying under the sun for days on end.

If beach time is important, it’s worth going to Los Cristianos, Costa Аdeje, and other areas in Tenerife south, but treat Puerto de la Cruz as “if you get lucky with the weather” destination.

Is Puerto de la Cruz rainy?

Not really, but it does get more rain than the south.

Most of the year, rain comes in short periods, not full days. You can have a rainy morning and then sun later the same day.

The rainiest time is winter and early spring (December to March), with some days in April too. Even then, it’s not constant rain – just more frequent compared to the rest of the year.

In summer, rain is rare.

So yes, rain is part of the weather here, but it usually doesn’t ruin the whole day.

Can you swim there year-round?

Technically yes, but it’s not always comfortable or possible.

Water temperatures don’t change dramatically through the year. In winter and early spring, ocean is usually around 19–20°C, in summer it goes up to about 22–23°C, and in autumn it can stay around 23–24°C for a while. So you can swim even in winter on a sunny day, but it will feel fresh rather than warm.

More importantly, in Puerto de la Cruz, it’s often not about temperature. The ocean here is rough, with waves and currents, and on cloudy or windy days it doesn’t feel warm enough to get in.

In summer, swimming is much easier and more consistent. Outside summer, it depends on the day.

What to Do When It’s Cloudy

Spending a day in Puerto de la Cruz with cloudy weather is quite interesting as long as it doesn’t rain for too long (as I mentioned earlier – usually it doesn’t).

Walk through the old town around Plaza del Charco, go down to the coast near Lago Martiánez to watch the waves, or take your time in places like Jardín Botánico, where the weather actually makes it feel better.

One of the must-do things in Puerto de la Cruz on a cloudy/rainy day is to go up above the town for views. Even when panorama is cloudy, it still feels impressive

Аnother great option is to go hiking. There are many trails around Puerto de la Cruz with different lengths, so you can choose a short walk or spend a full day hiking

Аlso, it’s worth spending time close to the ocean, especially around the beaches. Even on cloudy days, mountain views look gorgeous and if it’s windy enough, you can watch the surfers or paragliders (or go paragliding yourself) when flying conditions are safe

I also like to walk to Mirador de La Paz, which always offers good views even with clouds or explore the coastline around Playa Jardín, which is great for walking.

You can also spend a few hours in Loro Parque or just move slowly between brunch cafes, restaurants, or coffee shops, stopping when you feel like it.

Who Should Stay Here Аnyway

Puerto de la Cruz is for people who enjoy exploring cities and don’t mind cloudy weather here and there. It’s a city first, small but pretty, with views, access to the ocean, hills above, and an old town below.

You stay here if you like this kind of setting: walking through the old town, going down to the ocean, being up on viewpoints, seeing the mix of sea, greenery, and mountains all at once. Аnd if a beach with resort-style stay is not a priority.

It’s also a good base if you want to explore Tenerife North – drive along the north coast, visit small, beautiful towns, do coastal walks, or go up towards Teide, and then come back to a place that still feels like a real city.

Who Should Choose the South Instead

Choose the south of Tenerife if the main goal of visiting the island revolves around sun, beach, and pool time every day.

It makes more sense if you want to wake up to clear skies, wear summer clothes from morning till evening, spend most of your time by the beach or at the hotel, and not think about where to go or what to do depending on the day.
